Labyrinths, of different types have been in existence for 3,500 years. During the Middle Ages, many Christians considered making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to be an important part of their spiritual journey. Since not everyone could make the journey, major cathedrals built labyrinths that Christians could use as a substitute for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. During the last 15 years, there has been a renewal of interest in labyrinths as a tool for prayer in North America.

A labyrinth is different from a maze. A labyrinth has an entrance or mouth, a single circuitous path and a centre. When one walks the labyrinth, unlike any other walk, one does not have to worry where to turn or where to go. One just follows the path that has been laid out. There is only one way in. In a classical labyrinth, you walk out the same way you walked in. Christians walk the Labyrinth as a physical form of prayer. As one follows the many turns of the labyrinth your mind and spirit are helped to leave "baggage" behind as you walk into the centre - and then back out to the world.
